I Weep for My Country

In reflecting on slavery (and his own inability—external or internal—to free his slaves),Thomas Jefferson said, “I weep for my country when I reflect that God is just.” Leaving aside the question of God (or Divine Justice), I, too, weep for my country, tonight. This morning, I watched Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, and her powerful (and clearly truthful) testimony gave me a tiny bit of hope that justice would be done, both for her and the Court and the nation. But after Kavanaugh and Lindsay Graham turned the afternoon hearing into a partisan fight, I slowly lost that hope. At first, I thought his belligerence was backfiring. But then I realized that he was playing to the small audience of “wavering GOP Senators.” He and the GOPer Senators also played to the right wing base who will be contacting those Senators. I think the strategy worked.

He’ll be voted out of committee tomorrow and confirmed on Saturday. God help us all.
