In a diary a few days ago "We Must Fight for LGBTQ Rights AND Religious Liberty," I did not proofread a comment I made. I meant to call laws that force transgendered persons to use the bathrooms of their biological sex "stupid." Instead, typing too quickly, I wrote the phrase, "stupid trans people" and went on to criticize the laws. Since I continued to criticize discriminatory laws most people must have gotten the idea because no one in the comments called out that phrase. But it surely sent mixed messages (to say the least) because I did get several comments questioning how committed I was to being an LGBTQ ally (despite having an out bi-sexual daughter and out-gay nephew). I didn't understand why until I was re-reading, today.
LET ME APOLOGIZE FULLY AND SINCERELY TO ALL TRANSGENDERED PERSONS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS. I have a transgendered friend who has explained to me in great detail how much discrimination and oppression they face--and that they are often misunderstood even by gays, lesbians, and bi-sexuals. I have watched foolish politicians place barriers in the paths of your happiness. I am sorry that, even for a moment, I caused you any pain or added anything to your burdens.
These matters are too important and serious to risk more harm or even misunderstanding by sloppy proofreading. I am very sorry. It won't happen again.
